This study examines the perceptions of Catalan music teachers in primary and secondary education about the competences needed for an effective development of their profession. Through an electronic questionnaire the opinions of 443 music teachers about their importance for practice, their implementation and the training received in the initial training for their professional activity were collected. An explanatory analysis of the results was carried out: the perceptions about the competences were analysed in terms of demographic, educational/academic and careerrelated structural variables. The results are discussed based on their implications for the training and professional practice of music teachers.
