Abstract

This research is a contribution to the description of the evolution of word formation processes based on the analysis of corpus data. Specifically, it focuses on the affixal rivalry of the nominalizing suffixes -ción and -miento as reflected in the CHARTA corpus. The aims of this study are, firstly, to highlight the value of this corpus also in the field of historical word formation, showing the advantages it offers compared to other existing corpora (non-literary texts, reliability of the documentation, etc.) and, secondly, to demonstrate that its use makes it possible to complement, specify and increase the scope of the description of the diachrony of suffixation processes in Spanish in situations of affixal rivalry.
