Abstract

Linguistic minoritisation processes affect toponymy by reducing the use of local names for geographical objects located both inside and outside the corresponding linguistic area. It also influences speakers outside the minoritised linguistic system insofar as it is difficult for them to know and use vernacular toponyms. One of the aims of linguistic normalisation is therefore to standardise place names in the own language by fixing their form and encouraging their use. Standard gazetteers are also an invaluable resource for translators working with minority languages such as Yiddish who wish to preserve their toponyms as markers of cultural identity.
