    Abstract

The First Meeting of Immigrant Women was held in Barcelona from 15th. to 17th. April 1994. This was an attempt by some of the most important Catalan public institutions to emphasize their interest in sensitizing public opinion about the situation of migrant women. According to studies carried out by the Population Fund (United Nations) migrant women represent almost half the number of international migrants. The meeting encouraged the participation of all collectives implicated, from the associations created by these women to the organizations created to facilitate their integration in the counuies of destination. The meeting was also a forum to discuss theoretical perspectives on this issue from the viewpoint of various disciplines (anthropological, legal, historical, social, and economic), and showed a keen interest in facilitating contacts and mutual awareness.
