Abstract

The article deals with the insurable interests on the remotely controlled and autonomous vessels or drones. The current marine insurance market on hull and P&I is taken as a reference. The challenges posed by its adaptation to cover this new type of ships are theorized, changing what must be changed (mutatis mutandis). The analysis is mainly speculative, since merchant ships are still in testing phase and the insurance market is not sufficiently mature: there is a lack of actuarial data and commonly used standard contracts and practices. However, small remotely controlled and autonomous drones are in commercialization and already being insured.
