Within the framework of the preliminary measures for the new Law on Reception (Llei d'acollida), which was passed in April, 2010, the Government of Catalonia implemented a multilingual telematic website, which was translated into the nine most spoken languages in Catalonia. The study we present in this article discusses on the translation of the section on «Legislation» in the Reception Guide. First, we shall define and demarcate the area of translation for public services as the theoretical framework for this study. Then, following the norms of discourse analysis, we shall compare the original Catalan version of the «Legislation» section with the Spanish, English and Chinese versions. We will pay careful attention to questions such as register, the difficulties in translating this type of information, and the differences in technique adopted in the three translated versions. This contrastive analysis shall serve as a reflection on the translation of information regarding legislation to empower linguistic minorities and, by extension, to promote coexistence in diversity.
