Abstract

© 2018 Ex Aequo. All Rights Reserved. Some people feel that their sexual or gender identity does not fit into the available binary categories; their lives are invisible and their needs are not sufficiently explored. Through ten semi-structured interviews with non-binary people, we explore their experiences and referents, as well as their sexual orientation, their perception of desire and attraction. Searching for a liveable life, and for being able to give meaning to the lack of identification with the assigned sex and gender, they come up with creative strategies. These strategies allow them to best inhabit their bodies, identities and the world around them. In addition to describing their needs, we try to make explicit the hegemonic norms that generate patterns of exclusion and we also offer some recommendations for professionals and activists.
