Abstract
The coming to power of Hugo Chávez was a turning point in Venezuelan politics, both domestically and internationally. The foundation of the V Republic meant a transformation in Venezuela's foreign projection. The country began an international activism that placed it in a prominent place in the post-Cold War international system. Hugo Chávez's leadership overturned the correlation of forces in regional geopolitics following foreign policy guidelines which, in general terms, were novel. This article delves into the principles, interests and instruments of Venezuelan foreign policy from the initial moment of the Bolivarian Revolution until the death of President Chávez.
