Abstract
This paper aims to introduce into the debate on inequality of educational opportunity the in-fluence of activities related to the participation of secondary school students in the participa-tion structures of schools and in the participation structures of cultural and youth associations. Based on a longitudinal sample of 2056 students in the 10th grade in the city of Barcelona, we analysed the social structure of non-curricular activities and the relationship with academic variables such as performance and transition to post-compulsory education. The main result is that there is inequality in access to associative entities outside school and that the benefits of participating in these associations are substantially higher for young people from families with high cultural capital.
