Abstract

The study of the occupation of high mountain areas during the Iberian period needs to take into consideration the historical and territorial context in which these societies developed: in the case of the Eastern Pyrenees, this is the civitas of the Cerretani. The article analyses the social and territorial extent of the Cerretani, and the complexity of their modes of production, in which livestock activities played a very important role. At a methodological level, extensive excavations are necessary, not only to expand essential bioarchaeological analyses, but also to understand the internal differences within these hierarchical communities. We can't evaluate the occupation of high mountain areas if we don't also consider how they affected lower areas; in other words, if we do not understand the true extent of both their territorial and social reach.
