Abstract

The paper aims to analyze the effect of the training received in Second Chance Schools (E2O) on the skills acquired by young people, as well as on the later paths of educational return or entry into the labor market. The analytical strategy is quantitative, based on registration data provided by the Spanish Association of Second Chance Schools. The sample is 1592 young people who were trained during the academic year 2019-20, whose employment situation is recorded in December 2020, six months after completing the training. Descriptive techniques have been used to define the profile of young people and regression models have been used to analyze the impact of input variables on the skills acquired and later trajectories. Regarding the results, there is a high attribution of competences because of the training process, which affects all youth profiles. The profile at the beginning does have an impact on later trajectories; young people who were already studying or working before entering E2O have more positive trajectories, older people are more likely to enter the labor market and younger people are more likely to return to education. Surprisingly, neither doing a full itinerary nor doing more hours of training (above a certain threshold) contribute to successful trajectories. The article concludes with some recommendations for the improvement of Second-chance schemes.
