Abstract
We propose an input-image preprocessing method consisting of homogenization of the image to improve the discrimination capability of a correlation-based recognition process. This method is an approximation of the optimal filter. It offers the advantage that correlation with the preprocessed images can easily be implemented in an optical correlator working with phase-only spatial light modulators. © 1998 Optical Society of America.
