Abstract
The aim of this paper is to provide a syntactic account for one type of exceptional adverbs, the adverbial adjectives of some romance languages. Keeping in mind the traditional view that they are “empoverished adjectives”, we argue that their apparent adverbial behavior can be explained as a result of their properties at Lexical Conceptual Structure and their interaction with Functional Categories in Syntax. More specifically, we propose that they are the predicate of an ec at LCS and that they raise to a duplicate ofa non-agreeing FC in (overt or covert) syntax. © 1997, Walter de Gruyter.
