Induction of recA, umuC and sulA of E. Coli by gamma-irradiation

Abstract

The induction of three fusions of SOS genes (recA::lacZ, umuC::lacZ and sulA::lacZ) in E. coli MC1061 by gamma irradiation has been studied. This treatment was able to induce recA and sulA genes to similar levels, because the induction factor of both genes was approximately 4.5. However, gamma irradiation was specially potent in inducing umuC gene with an induction factor of 27. Results found suggest that the error-prone pathway can participate in mutagenesis induced by this treatment. In addition, results also indicate that strain MC1061, carrying the umuC::lacZ fusion can be useful to study the genetic effects of this irradiation as well as in research of possible radioprotective compounds.
