Abstract

The article presents the study of the implications of mathematics for undergraduate university studies in the field of
economics and business, and it does so through an empirical analysis of the characteristics of students at the
Autonomous University of Barcelona who started the undergraduate programmes of the Faculty of Economics and
Business in the 2018/2019 academic year. Following the chronological order of the transition from pre-university
studies to university ones, the article analyses, always linking to mathematics in the context of these degrees, the preuniversity
education system, the support courses offered by faculties before the beginning of the undergraduate
studies and the knowledge and opinion on mathematics at the moment at the beginning of the degrees. It also studies
how these aspects relate to outcomes in the undergraduate mathematics subjects. Additionally, the positioning of
teaching staff in this regard is discussed. All this information allows us to finally define a student segmentation for
which ad hoc initiatives can be designed in order to provide tackled support to each type of student.
