Abstract

The article analyses the discourses of women and men regarding domestic work from the conceptual framework of women as gatekeepers. The main objective is improving the knowledge about the trends of change in the gender relations and time uses. Specifically, it is proposed a double objective: to capture the imaginaries that support gender behaviours at home and to analyse the discourses about the relationships of control and influence between them. The methodological strategy is qualitative, and it is based on focus groups. The results indicate that women perceive a lack of male responsibility regarding domestic work, while men perceive female supervision. Consequently, a learning relationship is observed: female responsibility explain why they act as supervisors, while men accommodate to the learner role. In sum, the results suggests that the men participation in domestic work does not imply necessarily male co-responsibility.
