Catalan families are changing rapidly. In a country were divorce rates have remained low in comparison to other European countries, more than 13% of the children's live in a single parent home. In addition, 6% live with a stepparent, and even a larger number will reside with a single parent (usually the mother) or a stepparent at some point. This paper explores the role of non-resident fathers as providers of care, economic support and educational assistance after a divorce. Previous research has related the absence of the biological father with higher levels of emotional distress, school disengagement, and increases in delinquency rates. Using data drawn from the Longitudinal Survey of Families and Childhood, our research focuses on the frequency and quality of interaction between adolescents and their non-resident father. We work with a sample of 521 Catalan adolescents interviewed in the first wave (2006) and their mothers. Based on statistical analyses, our results show that parental support has a positive influence on educational outcomes, net of other influences, when ties between fathers and children remain strong in spite of living apart.
