    Abstract

In this article we present some results of a study of teachers of geography in public universities in Catalonia, with special emphasis on the position of women and their scientific work. In order to do this we use the approach developed in the English speaking world following the work of Wilbur Zelinsky (1973a) on the lack of professional women geographers, especially in university geography departments. For Catalonia the data shows that initially there was no such conspicuous absence, however, a progressive decline (disappearance) in staff numbers can be seen in recent years, which could lead to an increase in inequality.
