Abstract

Chapter 25, by Grigoris Panoutsopoulos and Kostas Gavroglu, shifts the focus of the volume to the European scene. They examine the birth of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, one of the most emblematic Big Science organizations in the world. They highlight the importance of financial, political, and diplomatic factors for understanding how Big Science projects get off the ground and develop. CERN was also the birthplace of the World Wide Web (WWW), perhaps the most impactful by-product of Big Science.
