© 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. In the present chapter, we provide an in-depth review of knowledge related to the intestinal mucosal immune compartment of fish. The anatomical and physiological makeup is described along with a comprehensive overview of the innate and adaptive cellular and molecular effectors that participate in the gastrointestinal immune response. Emerging tools and laboratory models for the study of mucosal immunity are highlighted.
