Abstract

Validation of the Impacto Familiar del Asma Bronquial Infantil-Revised questionnaire (IFABI-R) in Mexico included two phases: The preliminary phase, in which an experts team and 30 caregivers worked to obtain the linguistically adapted version, and the central phase, in which the IFABI-R psychometric properties were evaluated by interviewing 300 caregivers in two separate occasions (time interval of 15 days). The medical team collected information about severity of patients' disease. Caregivers informed about children's age and gender, morbidity indicators, social class, parents' perception of symptoms and impact of asthma in the family. The psychometric study showed a high reliability (test-retest: r = 0.94, p < 0.01, n = 292; internal consistency: α = 0.93). Regarding the extraction of the main components, the four-dimensional solution was the most convenient (explained variance = 64.47%). The IFABI-R concurrent validity was satisfactory since it showed positive relationships with severity of the disease, morbidity indicators and parent's perception of symptoms (p < 0.01). In conclusion, the IFABI-R has good psychometric properties in Mexican population.
