Abstract
A phenomenological model for the thermodynamics of nonequilibrium chemically reacting systems is proposed. It is based on the assumption that the specific entropy of the system is a function of the net reaction rate, as well as of the classical variables. This assumption is confirmed by the kinetic theory of reacting dilute gas mixtures. © 1999 American Chemical Society.
