Abstract

This study delves into experiences of aggression and also evasion strategies in daily commute among LGBTIQ+ community members in Barcelona, a city known for its open mindset and described as socially progressive. This research article helps to recognise LGBTIQ+ people as subjects within the city and aims to contribute to studies on dissident commuting by acting as conduit for the potential and real experiences of aggression in public spaces during the daily commute. In addition, it broadens the focus of mobility and gender studies that previously primarily focused on the constraints of women as they experience their commute to instead look at other minority groups. Through 15 interviews with people belonging to the LGBTIQ+ community, high levels of vulnerability to incidents of harassment in people with a non-normative sexuality was identified, which makes the use of different strategies to change the way in which these people move around the city absolutely critical. The results of this research must inform planning for future mobility actions or modify existing ones, while addressing the needs of all those who come together in different spaces that make up the foundations of the daily commute.
