Abstract

The risk of forest fires has been a subject of study from different disciplines, but its economic evaluation has received relatively little attention. This paper discusses the main issues involved from an economic perspective, and presents the results of a referendum application to evaluate a 50% reduction of the risk of forest fires in Catalonia, Spain. Results and specific risk valuation problems are discussed with some detail. © 2002 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
