Abstract

This research deals with the problem of intergenerational equity. It studies the shortcomings of conventional analysis, proposes an alternative and contrasts the need to incorporate the sustainability requirement. With this object, it first analyses the conventional approach and the alternatives. It constructs an alternative and studies the institutional framework needed for ensuring sustainability. Next, it studies the intergenerational weighting derived from individual preferences, as well as the optimality conditions of intergenerational investments. The research analyses the models used for climate change, the main intergenerational problem, and give the guidelines for an analysis coherent with sustainable development. Finally, the relationship between economic growth and environmental pressure is analyzed for the Spanish case. This allows the research to contrast the necessity of implementing the sustainability requirement and appropriate environmental policies.
