Abstract
This article focuses on the experiences of students from lower social background in a particular context where, on the one hand, the economic difficulties have increased, and on the other, the institutional conditions in the university have become harder. The time periods analysed are: when these young people choose their studies, their living conditions while studying at the university and their future projection concerning future decisions on education and work. The empirical analysis is made in interviews with students of Catalan and Andalusian universities. It is possible to identify among the low social background students a style of risk avoidance, a way to face reality very conscious of the obstacles ahead. As they are immersed in a time of uncertainty and more pressure for achievement, increases contradictions and makes less attractive their university bets.
