Abstract

This paper analyzes the adaptation made by Vicente Barrantes about Hoffmann's tale called "Haimatochare". This short story, entitled "¿Quien es ella?, was published in the journal El Mundo Pintoresco in 1858, to be extended later on to be published as volume in 1875. As proved, Barrantes based on the french translation of the german text made by Champfleury in 1856. The study of the texts shows the wishes of Barrantes to adapt the events thinking in Spanish public. Barrantes's "imitation" also shows the volunteer removal from the German model, and his French translation, ruling out story's ambiguity and changing it from the grotesque to the humorous, mocking with very good results.
