Cryptocaryon irritans and Enteromyxum leei are pathogenic parasites which are known to affect many different fish species. The severe effects of these pathogens on the first tentative cultures of the sharpsnout seabream in the Spanish Mediterranean have compromised the development of the local production. The records of these pathological episodes are used to illustrate the apparent recent expansion of these parasites in the Mediterranean.
