We discuss the problem of comparing two estimates of Prevosti's genetic distance as an extension of the theory developed by the same authors in a previous study (Biometrics (1995) 51 (4) 1216). The asymptotic distribution of the difference between distances is established in some situations. For practical purposes the comparison is performed by building bootstrap confidence intervals for the difference between the distances. A simulation study to choose between competing methods shows a greater performance of those with better theoretical properties. As an example to show the possibilities of the method, and only for illustrative purposes, some data on the colonization of America by the fruit fly Drosophila subobscura are analyzed. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
