Abstract

This study focuses on blank spaces in epigraphy, particularly on cartouches designed to contain inscriptions that were never engraved. Using advanced imaging techniques, fluorescence, and ultraviolet and infrared reflectography, the potential presence of pigment residues is investigated in two sarcophagi preserved at the Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya. The interdisciplinary analysis involves experts in art history, archaeology, chemistry, and scientific photography. The results highlight the challenges in detecting inscriptions and pigments due to the alteration of marble surfaces and previous conservation processes, providing new insights into the phenomenology of blank spaces in epigraphy.
