Abstract
An extensive pilot program of backyard composting was carried out in Catalonia. A local authority, named Mancomunitat Intermunicipal Voluntaria "La Plana" distributed more than 200 individual composters among private households. Participants were questioned on topics about organic wastes origins, frequency of organic wastes additions, presence of shredder, bulking agent, turning, moisture content, presence of bad odors as well as leachates or rodents, and compost utilization. Overall, results indicate that backyard composting is an effective method to divert organic wastes from municipal collection systems, thus providing money savings.
