Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of audiovisual translation and multimedia and game localisation, defining the different concepts and highlighting the main similarities and differences between them. The different audiovisual translation (AVT) transfer modes are also presented, focusing on the dubbing, subtitling, and game localisation processes and the agents involved in them. The wide array of products in which these translation types are applied are also discussed, followed by a description of the main critical issues and topics in these fields, such as reception studies, collaborative translation, quality, technology, and accessibility. The chapter concludes with a number of recommendations for practice and suggestions for further reading.
