Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of audio subtitling, both as an independent access service and as a service which is combined with audio description. A categorisation of audio subtitles/spoken subtitles is presented, taking into account various parameters, and the main features of audio subtitles are discussed. A summary of existing research as well as a description of diverging practices across countries is offered. The chapter also summarises the main recommendations and standards for this access service and points to future directions.
