Alfonso el Magnánimo y Jan van Eyck: pintura y tapices flamencos en la corte del rey de Aragón

Abstract

Already during his lifetime Jan van Eyck was the most celebrated painter in Europe, and King Alfonso the Magnanimous possessed at least a couple of works by the painter, as sources record. This particular appraisal of the great Flemish master is naturally in keeping with a more general phenomenon, the emulation by so many European royal and princely courts of the model of patronage and cultural ideals of the kings and princes of the House of Valois, including the branch of the Dukes of Burgundy. This orientation entailed, among other things, the consumption of Franco-Flemish or Flemish artistic and sumptuary artefacts. Following this very same model, Alfonso invested large sums of money in acquiring haute lisse tapestries, one of the pictorial genres that best embodied the ideals of magnificence and splendour which befit a prince. This article aims at a new and overall reading of the different documentary and critical sources that attest to King Alfonso the Magnanimous' consumption of this kind of artefacts.
