Abstract

The Roman villa of the Gran Via–Can Ferrerons (Premià de Mar, Maresme) is one of the largest in the region, dating from the beginning of the first century BC. It is also known for the uniqueness of its octagonal building, which was built in the 5th century AD, and is interpreted as a reception pavilion owned by an important member of the Barcino elite. It was later reused as a production centre, like many other villas of Late Antiquity. Excavations at the site have yielded many archaeological remains, including pottery, stone, and metal artefacts, and faunal remains. Throughout the different phases of occupation, some of these remains suggest an active relationship with the sea, sea products and fishing activities. Fishing hooks, net weights, as well as a variety of fish and shell remains are indicative of the use of very close marine resources. This paper brings together archaeological and archaeozoological remains to reconstruct the relationship of the inhabitants of this Roman villa with the sea, fishing practices and the use and consumption of marine resources.
