Abstract
Since 2015 concurred in Spain, both the rise of feminist activism and a remarkable turn in the profile of mainstream music have been highly noticeable. Reggaeton and similar genres from the Caribbean area replaced the usual Anglo-American hits in a short period of time. This replacement was accompanied by a widespread campaign that denounced both the sexist character and the lack of quality of the music hitting the charts. In this article, the main milestones of the controversy are analyzed from various feminist positions. I argue that the struggles for meaning around reggaeton -before becoming the legitimized music that it is today- implied a purplewashing process in line with the drift of Spanish and European policies on human rights.
