Abstract
In this paper I aim to provide a characterization of the concept of civic virtue. Firstly, I define civic virtue as the causally efficient motivation to act in a publicly oriented manner. Secondly, I maintain that the social spread of civic virtue should be understood as the establishment of a set of publicly oriented social norms.
