Abstract

In junctional linguistic typology, passive voice is conceived as one of the structures available in certain languages to solve a universal cognitive and communicative problem, the function of "participation", i.e. the relation between a verb and its nominal satellites. In this paper, we present afunctional characterization of passive voice and we illustrate the approach by analysing the passive voice contribution to the expression of the function of participation in two typologically and genetically related languages, French and Spanish.
