Description
(What) Language Counts in Mathematics Education (LaCoMEd) stands for a biannual individual action aimed at preparing an Advanced Grant proposal to be submitted in 2021. The major idea is to use the Spanish Grant to reinforce, amplify and build upon existing stable links with top senior colleagues in Greece/Sweden (University of Thessaly & University of Malmö, A. Chronaki), Germany (Technical University of Dortmund, S. Prediger), UK (University of Oxford, J. Ingram) and South Africa (University of Cape Town, M. S. Phakeng). Part of the budget will be necessary for professional editing of the ERC B1 & B2 documents. The goals to be accomplished are as follows: -Spanish Action, Strategic Goal 1. Interchanging networked line database, repositories and critical reflection regarding the Pursued Research Aims of the ERC Action (see below). -Spanish Action, Strategic Goal 2. Negotiating tasks of scientific assessment to be assigned to the advisory board intended for the ERC Action. -Spanish Action, Technical Goal. Resourcing on qualified professional assistance for the formal language editing of the B1 and B2 documents tied to the application of an Advanced Grant 2021 Call. Overall, I seek for the motion of a two-year agenda of collaborative preparatory work as a means of facilitating the creation of an ERC Advisory Board of four researchers who are academics with responsibilities in teacher education (TE) and professional development (PD) programs for primary and secondary teachers and teacher educators in their local institutions and whose scientific trajectories are highly recognised in the international community of educational research. Such Advisory Board of distributed expertise will broaden the critical mass, the workforce and the range of views for the elaboration of an Advanced Grant proposal with more probability of success. It will particularly ensure that the Pursued Research Aims are feasible, pertinent and have the potential of impacting the state-of-the-art. The planned budget with a series of mutual working visits in the different countries for the intensification of the collaboration with the colleagues listed will allow me to strength the steps towards the completion of the ERC proposal. The complex challenges involved in transforming the classroom knowledge produced so far into research-based knowledge for teacher education and professional development is at the core of the ERC proposal with two aims provisionally formulated as: -ERC Action, Pursued Research Aim 1. Improving subject-matter teaching by designing, implementing and evaluating language-responsive instructional arrangements for the learning of specific curricular topics. -ERC Action, Pursued Research Aim 2. Theorizing standards of language use in topic-specific teaching and learning processes. These aims, improving instructional arrangements and theorizing innovative standards, will be pursued, in their revised formulation (Spanish Action, Strategic Goal 1), and assessed (Spanish Action, Strategic Goal 2) for the exemplary field of school mathematics, which is in my area of expertise. in the theoretical foundation of language-responsive TE and PD subject-matter programs, I will specifically bring to the fore the pedagogic value and didactical potential of all the languages brought to the classroom by: a) learners, 2) teachers, and 3) texts that arise within the practice of subject contents.
