Variació i creativitat en la subtitulació

The aim of this research project is to respond to the following two types of needs as far as screen translation is concerned. The first goal is to respond to the need to find out linguistic and discourse patterns which can be applied to subtitles, so that dialext and social varieties can be traced down, since up to now the language in the subtitles has not been able to find the way to cast off the most formal standard variety,even in situations in which it seems totally inadequate (television series, speeches by witnesses appearing spontaneously in the news, etc.). Therefore, there is a scientific aim - the search of the expression of the oral language in texts to be read with haste on the screen - in the study and subsequent design of style patterns according to the situational context in which subtitles are inserted; all this without forgetting the restrictions of selection, natural of any mass media, needed to come up with a product of quality. The second aim is to respond to a social demand. The main group of consumers of subtitles (hard-of.hearing people, learners of the written language and viewers who want to have access to original versions, but who need help to understand what is being said) are demanding not only an increase of the subtitled programmes, but written versions that reflecton the screen the sense, the intention, the mode, and the style of what is being said by the speakers.
