Nanoestructures or nanoparticles exchange coupled to another magnetic material (e.g. an antiferromagnet or a hard magnet) have not been broadly studied and consequently many aspects of the resulting magnetic properties remain poorly understood. In this project we plan to investigate the interplay between magnetostatic effects and different types of interactions in patterned magnetic nanostructures and nanoparticles. The main goal of the research is to better understand the role of the magnetic interactions on the magnetic properties of nanostructures. In particular, we will focus on the correlation between structural (e.g. size, shape, distance, microstructure) and magnetic parameters(e.g. types of materials, anisotropies). This comprehensive knowledge will allow us to tailor and improve the magnetic properties of magnetic composite nanostructured systems by making use of the extra degrees of freedom introduced by the interactions. For lithographed nanostructures one of the main aspects will be the control the magnetization reversal process, while for nanoparticles the emphasis will be in improving the coercivity and the blocking temperature. These two aspects of the work relate to some of the possible limiting factors in magnetic recording heads and media as recording density evolves towards 1 Tbit/in2
