Aluminium tolerance will be evaluated in hydroponically grown maize (Zea mays) varieties, selected for Al-tolernce in France by CIRAD/IRAT/DCV (Montpellier) in collaboration with INRA/ENSA (Rennes). Our results using quick screening tests based on both root staining with hematoxyline and root growth index will be compared to obtained in the field by the French institutes in order to prove the reliability of the quick screening tests. For distinguishing between the two main groups of tolerance mechanisms (exclusion and internal tolerance) the accumulation of Al within plants and the speciation of Al in nutrient solutions will be analysed in tolerant varieties. We will also study the tolerance to secondary stress induced by Al toxicity; mainly deficiency of essencial nutrients such as calcium and phosphorous will be considered. Taking into account the possible role of Al-chelation in the tolerance mechanisms, we will also analyse the content of certain organic acids in tolerant varieties
