We intend to recover, make known and analize the material culture of science. By tjos we ,eam mpt just the set pf heterogeneuos elements (technical objects, instruments, and texts) which are the material product of scientific practice, but also the socio-cultural contexts that endows thesse elements with meaning. Thus we are centrally concerned with historiography of science, rather than with archives, documents or objects as such. The project has three main objectives: 1- To contribute to the recovery and preservation of the material culture of science, through the development of classification tools that allow is integration in the net; in some cases such as oral history and the archives of contemporary science, the aim is not simply to preserve, but rather to create the xources that will allow the history of recent science to written. 2- To analize the role of material culture in three domains: the history of modern and contemporary physics, with an emphasis on the development of the physicists´ community in Spain after the Civil War; the uses of scientific instruments in scientific research and education in the physico-chemical sciences, including industrial applications in 19th century Spain; and the medicoquirurgical education in Barcelona during the Enlightenment up to the restauration of its University in 1843.3- To join in similar projects at European and international level, in order to make knowm and scientifically useful the results of our research.
