This project focuses on the relationship established between health professionals and lay people around certain changes connected with technological innovations, ocurred in the sphere of medical care and prevention within occupational medicine, pediatrics, dermatology and sifilography and colonial medicine, with an emphasis on the rhetoric analysis of popularization processes. One aim of the project is the study of the way in which new technologies, according to gender categories, contributed to the construction of historiacl identities, be it workers, disabled people or the inhabitants of diverse colonial settings as differnt as Morrocco and Equatorial Guinea-whence race played a leading role. A further aim deals with the study of professional/lay relationship as a way to the production of knowledge in several medical domains. Classecal archive and literary sources as well as less familiar sources as posters collections and radio broadcasting are sought. The issue of "the publics" for technologies will stand as a central concern in this study. Relations among science, technology, medicine and its publics are expected to contribute to the explanation of the key features in the construction of our Western "culture of health"
