The main goal of the present projext is the study and characterisation of two types of materials (nematic liquid crystal TVs and photopolymers) and their applications to image processing. These materials present different behaviour as amplitude and phase modulators, change of the polarisation state, and resolution. We will characterise these parameters to optimise the modulation configuration needed for the corresponding application. We will use these materials to praoduce diffractive optical elements: lenses, computer generated holograms that will work as pattern recognition filters, and phase mask to encode and encript information. We will study different applications of these devices in image processing.1)Optical recognition of colour patterns. We will consider the colour as thith dimension and we will generalise the pattern recognition tools and the filter design to these 3D functions.2) Textura classification. We will use an optical system illuminated with white light to perform a parallel process (3channels simultameously).3)Optical memories to store filter banks. We will use the volume effect to store different holograms. We willanalyse the capacity and we will optimise the registration process.4)Security encryption systems. We will study a method to encrypt the information. The encrypted signal will be detected by using a correlator.5)Polarisation gratings generation. We will study theoretically the properties of the polarisation diffraction gratings and they will be implemented in the different materials.
