Project Details

Several studies (...) have shown that high virgin olive oil diets, with a high content in n-9 monounsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants, and high corn oil diets, rich in n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, exert a protective and stimulatory action, respectively, on the experimental breast cancer. These effects are carried out on the promotion stage of the carcinogenesis, although a clear influence during the iniciation also exists. The different characteristics observed related to the effect of the diet depending on whether it is administered from the onset of the puberty or from the post-puberal period have suggested the importance of the timing of the exposure to the high-fat diets in relation to the susceptibility or resistance of the mammary gland to the development of cancer, as well as the tumour malignancy characteristics. In this project, it will be studied, on the one hand, the influence of olive oil and corn oil diets on the mammary gland in critical periods of development. (...) Moreover, the influence of these diets on the iniciation and promotion stages of the mammary carcinogenesis will be studied, from a clinical and histopathological point of view. Finally, mechanisms of the modulating effects of the dietary lipids on the mammary gland and the DMBA-induced carcinogenesis will be studied. Specifically, the putative effects on the proliferation and the apoptosis indexes, the lipid peroxidation levels, the hormone dependance status and the gene expression profile (genomic signature) will be analyzed. (...) The correlation of the results from the clinical, morphological and molecular studies will allow characterizing the effects and the mechanisms of action of such nutrients both on the mammary gland and the breast cancer.
