    Project Details

Fish intensive cultures involve manipulating the animals (handling, crowding, capture, anesthesia, etc.) and this affects the haemostasia and induces stress responses. In the present project the immunological and metabolic responses induced by acute stress (capture and handling) and chronic stress (crowding) will be studied on a particular species, "Sparus auratus" sea-bream, widely cultured in Spain. The level of plasma cortisol will be analyzed as a primary response index. As secondary response indexes, variables (fagocitosis test, immunoglobulins, morphometrics and alterations of lymphoid organs) and selected metabolic and energetic parameters (blood glucose and lactate, haematology) will be determined. Moreover, both the response to short-term stress as well as the recovery dynamic after stress will be studied.
