Description

To study if startle reflex is a useful tool as a possible marker of individual differences in the functioning of the Behavioural Inhibition System (BIS) as proposed in Gray's theory. This main goal would consist of three specific goals to be achieved in three different laboratory experiments: 1) Differences in the affective modulation of startle reflex due to the interaction between individual differences in the functioning of the BIS and the type (disgust versus fear) of the aversive stimuli presented.2) Study of the differences related to the BIS functioning in the acquisition and extinction of fear stimuli classically conditioned in the laboratory through the affective modulation of the startle reflex paradigm; and 3) Study of the effect of individual differences in the functioning of the BIS on the anxiety response under the fear-potentiated startle paradigm. Our goals would be achieved by means of three consecutive quasi-experimental studies where personality variables would be controlled and the presented stimuli would be manipulated. In two of them we would use the pictures of the IAPS, developed by Lang and validated in Spanish samples by Moltó et al. and in the third experiment the paradigm of fear-potentiated startle-as described by Grillon-would be used. University students are de subjects or study. This jçkind of sample allows to have greater sample sizes. Exclusion criteria would be the presence of psychiatric disorder and cognitive, acoustic or visual deficits which could interfere with the perception of the stimuli presented
