Project Details

Anthropological and ecological studies suggest that local ecological knowledge 1) confers many benefits to the individuals holding the knowledge, and 2) holds the potential to contribute to rural development and natural resource management. In spite of the interest in the topic, research on the potential contribution of local ecological knowledge to rural development in the Iberian Peninsula is scant. The research proposed here will (1) study the role of local ecological knowledge in rural development and cultural landscape management in the Iberian Peninsula, and (2) compare results from those case studies with results from ongoing research in Asia and Latin America. We will collect data on the traditional management system of three cultural landscapes. In each case study, we will (i) document the local ecological knowledge associated to the management of the landscape, and (ii) estimate the contribution of that knowledge to household well-being. For the project we will use qualitative and quantitative methods from anthropology, ethnoecology, and ethnobotany. Research will be leaded by V. Reyes-García, ICREA researcher at the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, with the collaboration of scientists form the social and the natural sciences from different universities, all them with a large record of international publications. The project will reinforce the investment of the European Union in the creation of an international referent on ethnoecology in Spain (through the creation of the Ethnoecoloy Lab coordinated by Reyes García, MIRG-CT-2006-036532), and will help internationalise the scientific activity of the researchers in the group.
