Putative neuroprotective potencial of fluorinated salicylates treatment in two animal models of multiple sclerosis

The main objective of this Project is to evaluate the putative ability of fluorinated salicylates to modify. The inflammatory process and to reduced the neuropathology associate with immune-mediated diseases such as experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in Lewis rat and TMEV in mouse, two animal models of Multiple Sclerosis. The methods proposed to carry out in the present project include functional evaluation (clinical score, rotarod and activity cage), histopathological analysis (histochemical and immunocytochemical techniques) and molecular biology studies (Western Blot, Ribonuclease Protection Assay and Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorter tecniques). The experimental design allow the possibility of a mindful study in the different phases of development and progression of the disease. Results publish using Triflusal (a fluorinated salicylate) in an excitotoxic lesion model showed that the administration of this drug induce an important inhibition of the activation of genes related to inflammation, suggesting that this drug may play a putative role in inflammation associated with demyelinating pathological processes. The result we will obtain accomplishing this project may be the scientific basis to outline new therapeutic strategies to stop the progressive functional impairment related to Multiple Sclerosis disease
